But from where and when did Carnaval originate?<\/b><\/h3>\n
The origin of the event is shrouded in the mists of history… but it’s believed to have originated with the pagan festivals of ancient Egypt, more than 5000 years ago.\u00a0 From there the tradition passed to the Roman Empire, and then to all of Europe. <\/span><\/p>\n Carnaval arrived in the Americas with the Spanish and Portuguese colonizers of the 15th century.\u00a0 And, although the church does not admit it as a religious holiday, the reality is that it maintains a strong presence in the predominantly Catholic countries.<\/span><\/p>\n In <\/span>Spain<\/b>, people start preparing months in advance, as many people create their elaborate costumes themselves.\u00a0 Groups of friends may come together to create <\/span>chirigotas<\/span><\/i>, humorous songs, which are then sung in local competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n The party begins before <\/span>Cuaresma<\/span><\/i>, with the famous <\/span>Lardero Thursday,<\/span><\/i> and ends on <\/span>Miercoles de<\/span><\/i> Cenizas <\/span><\/i>(Ash Wednesday)<\/span>\u00a0with the <\/span>Entierro de la Sardina <\/em>(the Burial of the Sardine) a procession which culminates in the burning of a large (fake) sardine – a symbolic “burial” of the past, and a chance for all to start anew.\u00a0 In Spain, you’ll see the events at their grandest scale when you visit:<\/p>\n In <\/span>Latin<\/b> America<\/b>, indigenous cultures have a strong influence on the festivities.\u00a0 Costumes are true works of art, full of colour.\u00a0 Dancing to the salsa and reggaeton rhythms is of paramount importance.\u00a0 During the Carnaval period, anywhere you go you’ll see people dancing, but especially in: <\/span><\/p>\n Now that you know a little more about Latin culture, you’ll need to pick up some key terms to get the most out of your Carnaval experience.\u00a0 What do you think are the key terms you’d like to know?<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n El carnaval es una de las fiestas m\u00e1s divertidas e importantes del planeta, pero sobre todo en la cultura latina. Adem\u00e1s, se canta y baila sin parar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lo cierto es que se desconoce su origen, pero los historiadores piensan que puede estar en las fiestas paganas del antiguo Egipto, es decir hace m\u00e1s de <\/span>5000 a\u00f1os<\/b>, y de all\u00ed la tradici\u00f3n pas\u00f3 al\u00a0 imperio Romano y despu\u00e9s a toda Europa. Finalmente, lleg\u00f3 a Am\u00e9rica con los colonizadores espa\u00f1oles y portugueses en el Siglo XV.\u00a0 Y, aunque la iglesia no la admite como una fiesta religiosa, lo cierto es que est\u00e1 vinculada con los pa\u00edses de tradici\u00f3n cat\u00f3lica.<\/span><\/p>\n En<\/span> Espa\u00f1a<\/b>, la gente empieza a prepararse con meses de antelaci\u00f3n, pues muchas personas cosen los disfraces ellos mismos. Adem\u00e1s, hay grupos de amigos que se juntan para crear chirigotas, canciones humor\u00edsticas,\u00a0 que luego cantan en concursos locales. Esta gran fiesta popular y de car\u00e1cter l\u00fadico, comienza antes de la Cuaresma, con el famoso <\/span>Jueves Lardero<\/b> y termina el <\/span>Mi\u00e9rcoles<\/b> de Cenizas<\/b>, con el entierro de las sardinas. Los carnavales m\u00e1s famosos son los de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y C\u00e1diz.<\/span><\/p>\n En <\/span>Latinoam\u00e9rica<\/b>, esta fiesta adopt\u00f3 elementos de las <\/span>culturas ind\u00edgenas<\/b>. Aqu\u00ed, son muy importantes los disfraces, verdaderas obras de arte llenas de color. Pero, sobre todo, lo fundamental es <\/span>bailar<\/b> al ritmo de salsa y reggaet\u00f3n. En estas fechas vayas donde vayas ves personas disfrazadas y bailando. Adem\u00e1s, hay un gran concurso de pe\u00f1as para ense\u00f1ar sus vestidos y coreograf\u00edas.
