In this article we will not put the focus on the linguistic determinism, but, simply, in the origin of some color names in Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Azul (blue):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Languages connected with Spanish usually have a name for that color in which the structure <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bl + vowel\/s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is present: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bleu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in French; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blau<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Catalan\u2026 In Spanish that formula has been replaced by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: this word come from the Arabic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lazaw\u00e1rd<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, name given to the deep-blue metamorphic rock lapis lazuli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rojo (red):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The noun red is used in Spanish since the 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. It comes from the Latin word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">russus, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to make reference to a specific tone of red: dark red. Before that, terms such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bermejo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encarnado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were commonly used by Iberian speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2358\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2358 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/spanishworldgroup.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/umbrella.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">@smile_97<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Naranja (orange):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was first, the colour or the fruit? The answer is simple: the fruit. The word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naranja<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has an Arabic origin, and it was used to name the fruit. Then the same word was used to make reference to the color of that entity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Amarillo (yellow):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of this color has its origin in the word that was used in Latin to make reference to the bitter taste. The link between both concepts has to be found in the colour of the skin when people have liver problems: bile was called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitter humor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Is Spanish <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amargo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Verde (green):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word v<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ir\u012ddis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was used in Lat\u00edn to name the same colour\u2026 but also to make reference to vigorous and full of life things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Negro (black):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Latin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">niger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was used to name the shiny black colour. The matte black had another name: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ater<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Blanco (white)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This word has its origin in the German language spoken by the invaders of the Iberian Peninsula in the middle ages. Its been registered since the 12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. Before that, the Latin word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was spreadly used.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2356\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2356 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/spanishworldgroup.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/colored-doors.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">@ro_ka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>\u00bfDe d\u00f3nde vienen los nombres de los colores en espa\u00f1ol?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El tema de los colores ha dado para muchos estudios ling\u00fc\u00edsticos y antropol\u00f3gicos, especialmente la relaci\u00f3n entre lenguaje y percepci\u00f3n: \u00bfpercibimos mejor las diferencias entre los tonos a los que damos un nombre distinto? En este art\u00edculo no entraremos en esas complejas cuestiones sobre el determinismo ling\u00fc\u00edstico, sino que, simplemente, abordaremos el origen de los nombres de algunos colores en castellano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Azul:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mientras que el las lenguas cercanas al espa\u00f1ol el nombre de este color suele estar formado por <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bl + vocal\/es<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, en ingl\u00e9s; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bleu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, en franc\u00e9s; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blau<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, en catal\u00e1n\u2026), en espa\u00f1ol hemos sustituido esta f\u00f3rmula por <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: esta palabra viene del \u00e1rabe &#8220;lazaw\u00e1rd&#8221;, t\u00e9rmino relacionado con &#8220;l\u0101zuward&#8221;, que era el nombre de la famosa gema azul que actualmente conocemos como \u201clapisl\u00e1zuli\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rojo:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La palabra <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rojo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, que empez\u00f3 a utilizarse en el espa\u00f1ol en el siglo XV, viene del adjetivo latino <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">russus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, que era un tono espec\u00edfico de rojo: un rojo fuerte. Antes de que <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rojo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> se impusiera como vocablo m\u00e1s frecuente, sol\u00edan emplearse <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bermejo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> o <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encarnado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Naranja:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bfQu\u00e9 fue antes; la fruta o el color? La respuesta es sencilla: la fruta. El t\u00e9rmino <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naranja<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> se tom\u00f3 en principio del \u00e1rabe para hacer referencia al fruto. Despu\u00e9s dio nombre al color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Amarillo:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El nombre de este color viene del t\u00e9rmino latino que se empleaba para el sabor amargo. El origen de esta asociaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 en el color que adquir\u00eda la piel por el mal funcionamiento en la secreci\u00f3n de la bilis, llamada entonces <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humor amargo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Verde:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viene de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vir\u012ddis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, que se empleaba en lat\u00edn, adem\u00e1s de para denominar ese color, tambi\u00e9n para hacer referencia a aquello que ten\u00eda mucha vida y vigor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Negro:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En lat\u00edn se empleaba <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">niger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00fanicamente para denominar el color negro brillante. El negro mate recib\u00eda un nombre distinto: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ater<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Blanco<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Este adjetivo lleg\u00f3 al espa\u00f1ol desde el alem\u00e1n en la Edad Media, en la \u00e9poca de las invasiones germ\u00e1nicas. Hay constancia de su uso desde el siglo XII.
