One of those discuss is related to written expression, which is what we are going to treat this time in our blog.

1.

As a Spanish teacher I have seen that one of the most difficult letters when we start writing is “H”. The letter “H” is not pronounced, so you need to memorize a couple of rules to be able to use it correctly. At the end, it’s all about practice.

You need to write “H” before the words which begins with diphthongs / ua /, / ue /, / ui /. Example: hueso

We write “H” in front of the sequences / ie /, / ia / in initial word position. Example: hielo

Write “H” in the words that begin with the sequence hum- followed by a vowel. Example: Humano

These are the principal rules with “H”.

2.

As we know Spanish is read exactly as it is written, so another problem that Spanish students encounter with use of “LL” and “Y”. The problem is that the two words are pronounced in the same way, so that it´s difficult to know when we must put the “LL” and when we must put the “Y”.

We use “Y”:

After the prefixes ad-, des-, dis-, and sub-. Example: disyuntiva

Words that contain the syllable yec. Example: inyectable

We use “LL”:

The words whom finish in / illo / illa / ella / ello. Example: /botella / camello..

All the forms of the verb “hallar” (encontrar). Example: /hallé / hallaba / he hallado /….

3.

Spanish is spoken throughout Spain and throughout South America. In each of these countries the accent is different and therefore, some have more difficulties than others when writing. We see that in the Canary Islands, they usually have some differences with use of “C”, “Z” and “S” comparing to other cities of Spain. The problem is caused by the pronunciation, while in some parts of Spanish speaking cities “C” is pronounced < cerilla > which makes it easier to differentiate between “C” and “S”, in other areas or countries “C” is pronounced < serilla >. Thus, spelling errors are more likely to occur between “C”, “Z” and “S” in such places.

4.

The singular and plural. What happen with this!!!

It is easy when the words are finished in vowels (a, e, i, o, u) only have to add “S”. Example: casa (singular) – casas (plural)

When the words are finished in consonants then we have to add “ES””. Example: caracol /singular) – caracoles /plural)

Also, we need to be aware of the fact that “Z” is never used after “E” or “I”; in such cases “C” is required to be used. Example: lapis (singular) – lapices (plural)

5.

As a Spanish teacher I normally find it very difficult for students to differentiate between the masculine and feminine words in both speaking and writing. The rule is quite clear most of the times.

The words which end in “A” are feminine and the ones ending in “O” are masculine. . Example: la niña and el niño

The nouns that end in -ista are masculine and feminine. Example: el artista – la artista

6.

Normally it is very complicated to write well because sounds are exactly the same.

In Spanish, the words that end in -aje and -eje always are written with “J”. Example: garaje.

All those verbs ending in -ger, -igerar and -gir are written with “G”, example: acoger, except tejer y crujir.

7.

Another difficulty when you write Spanish is the difference between “B” and “V”. It is one of the most frequent mistakes that teachers usually find among students. Although there are rules, there are also some exceptions.

Before any consonant, write b and not v. This rule includes the words that contain bla, ble, bli, blo, blu, bra, bre, bri, bro, bru. Example: mueble.

the words that end in aba are written with “B”. Example: amaba

Please note that we always write “B” after the letter “M” and “V” after the letter “N”. Example: enviar- embajada

8.

It is seen that students might be having difficulties in writing the words with similar pronunciation. For instance, both words “echo” and “hecho” are pronounced as “echo”. However, as it can be noticed the spelling is completely different. The only way to differentiate between these similar pronunciations is to comprehend the concept. Example:

Echo, without “H” is the verb echar

Hecho with “H” is the verb hacer

9.

One of the most critical rules is the use of “K”, which sometimes can be confused with “Q”. We use “K” when using words from other languages. Because “K” does not naturally exist in Spanish, but we write it the same as the foreign words to preserve its original writing. Example: Kiwi, karaoke, karate.

10.

In cases of a need for falling intonation, an accent is placed.

An accent is placed when theis in the end of the word, this rule is only applicable when the last part of a word finishes with “N”, “S” and vowels. Example: cancion.

An accent is placed when theis in the penultimate of the word when it does not finish with “N”,” S” and vowels. Example: árbol the accent always will be placed before the last syllable.

An accent is always placed when the tonic syllable is in the antepenultimate syllable of the word. Example: cómodo.

Ejemplo: /botella / camello.

Con la forma del verbo “hallar” (encontrar). Ejemplo: /hallé / hallaba / he hallado.

3.
