10 Reasons Blended Learning is Here to Stay:

Blended learning is a worldwide trend.  In Asia, more and more educational institutions are opting for this option and, what was once a residual and almost anecdotal choice, has become the new necessity. But what is Blended Learning and why has it been increasing in prominence?

What is Blended Learning?

Blended Learning is an educational methodology that embraces a hybrid option of traditional face-to-face teaching with different alternatives offered by online education.

What are the Benefits?

1- It allows you to make your agenda more flexible:

In an increasingly difficult working world, with impossible schedules, trips and meetings, the option to choose when and from where you study is growing in the hearts of many students and professionals.

2- We have become used to owning our decisions:

We must admit, in our day to day we choose from thousands of options of yogurts, cereals, telephone companies, taxis, insurance…. Freedom of choice and the infinite possibilities associated with consumerism and liberalism affect all fields, including education.  Our students increasingly want to have more voice and vote on how and what they study – feedback we, as teachers, love to receive!

3- It is demonstrably more effective:

Whether for the reasons stated above, or for pedagogical evidence (showing that a student learns more as he or she gets more involved in his own “meta-learning”), there are several studies that ensure greater success in learning when the course counts with the characteristics of Blended education.

4- Sometimes we forget things – and apps are the perfect assistant:

Imagine that to your memory, your agenda and your teacher you can add an app or platform that reminds you at the right time what unit you should take back, what video you can visit to complement your learning or when it is the workshop or event to complement what you learned the last fortnight. It can definitely make a difference.

5- We have the world in our hand (or in the pocket):

You get bored in the subway: you study Spanish. Your friends don’t stop talking about politics at dinner: you study Spanish. Your bus does not arrive: you study Spanish. The school is in your pocket at your fingertips at any time. And the sum of those little moments is sometimes the key to learning!

6- Technology does not get tired (nor can it fall ill, nor have feelings):

How many times has it happened to us to start a course and see that we don’t like the teacher? Or feel that there is no chemistry with the facilities, or that our classmates squeak us … The possibility that part of the learning is digital minimizes the impact of all these issues, which in a 100% traditional education have no escape or alternative.

7- Not everyone learns at the first time:

Just as the classes cannot be rewound, nor does the teacher usually repeat his explanations, the digital options usually allow us the possibility to return again and again to what we are learning and it costs us so much … Remember: practice makes perfect!

8- And not everyone learns at the same pace:

Similarly, a classroom usually has diverse students who learn at very different rates. The combination with online methods and data analysis allows each student to receive what they need just when they need it, something impossible to offer for a traditional teacher in a normal classroom.

9- But nothing equals (yet) the direct interaction with a teacher

Yes, we all know, online education has infinite advantages. But let’s recognize that nothing is comparable nowadays to a good native teacher or Spanish tutor, no machine has the ability to impact, intuit and touch us as a great teacher can. Maybe in the distant future, or in some chapter of Black Mirror, but not in this century.

 

 

10- Group interaction is an irreplaceable value (and sometimes a pleasure):

The vast majority of our students in Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur see in Spanish classes not only an opportunity to learn the language, but also a perfect excuse to meet new people with the same interests, get out of the routine, laugh , socialize, find new hobbies … And that is not offered by apps.

Lo estamos viendo en nuestras escuelas de Spanish World: el aprendizaje Blended está de moda. En Asia cada vez más instituciones educativas se deciden por esta opción educativa y, lo que una vez fue una elección residual y casi anecdótica, se ha convertido en una auténtica realidad y una tendencia a tener muy en cuenta. Pero, ¿qué es eso del Blended Learning y por qué está de moda?

 

¿QUÉ ES EL BLENDED LEARNING?

 

Se entiende por Blended Learning (o Aprendizaje de tipo Blended) el enfoque y las metodologías educativas que optan por una opción híbrida a medio camino entre la enseñanza presencial tradicional y las diferentes alternativas que ofrece la educación online.  

 

¿POR QUÉ SE ESTÁN PONIENDO DE MODA LOS CURSOS BLENDED?

 

1- Te permite flexibilizar tu agenda: en un mundo laboral cada vez más difícil, con horarios, viajes y reuniones imposibles, la opción de poder elegir cuándo y desde dónde estudias gana enteros entre muchos profesionales.

 

2- Nos hemos acostumbrado a ser dueños de nuestras decisiones: hay que admitirlo, en nuestro día a día elegimos entre miles de opciones de yogures, cereales, compañías telefónicas, de taxis, de seguros…. La libertad de elección y las infinitas posibilidades asociadas al consumismo y el liberalismo afectan a todos los campos, también a la educación. Nuestros estudiantes cada vez quieren tener más voz y voto en cómo y qué estudian.

 

3- Es más efectivo (está demostrado):

Ya sea por las razones anteriormente expuestas, o por otras más de corte pedagógico (que muestran cómo el estudiante aprende más cuanto más se hace cargo de su propio aprendizaje), son diversos los estudios que aseguran un mayor éxito en el aprendizaje cuando el curso cuenta con las características propias de la educación Blended. 

 

4- A veces se nos olvidan las cosas (y las apps son el asistente perfecto)

Imagina que a tu memoria, tu agenda y tu profesor puedes sumar una app o plataforma que te recuerda en el momento adecuado qué unidad debes retomar, qué vídeo puedes visitar para complementar tu aprendizaje o cuándo es el workshop o evento para complementar lo aprendido la última quincena. Sin duda puede marcar la diferencia.

 

5- Tenemos el mundo en la mano (o en el bolsillo):

Te aburres en el metro: estudias español. Tu amigos no paran de hablar de política en la cena: estudias español. Tu autobús no llega: estudias español. La escuela está en tu bolsillo a tu alcance en cualquier momento. ¡Y la suma de esos pequeños momentos a veces son la clave para aprender!

 

6- La tecnología no se cansa (ni puede caerme mal, ni tiene sentimientos):

¿Cuántas veces nos ha pasado empezar un curso y ver que no nos gusta el profesor? O sentir que no hay química con el aula, o que nuestros compañeros nos chirrían… La posibilidad de que parte del aprendizaje sea digital minimiza el impacto de todas estas cuestiones, que en una educación 100 % tradicional no tienen escapatoria ni alternativa alguna. 

 

7- No todos aprendemos a la primera:

Así como las clases no se pueden rebobinar , ni el profesor suele repetir sus explicaciones, las opciones digitales suelen permitirnos la posibilidad de volver una y otra vez a lo que estamos aprendiendo y tanto nos cuesta…Recordad:  ¡la práctica hace la perfección!

 

8- Y no todos aprendemos al mismo ritmo:

Igualmente, un aula suele tener alumnos diversos que aprenden a ritmos muy diferentes. La combinación con métodos online y el análisis de datos permite que cada alumno reciba los que necesita justo cuando lo necesita, algo imposible de ofrecer para un profesor tradicional en un aula normal.

 

9- Pero nada iguala (todavía) a la interacción directa con un profesor. 

Que sí, que vale, que la educación online tiene infinitas ventajas. Pero reconozcamos que nada es equiparable en la actualidad a un buen profesor nativo o tutor de español, ninguna máquina tiene la capacidad de impactar, intuir y tocarnos como lo puede hacer un gran docente. Quizá sí en un futuro lejano, o en algún capítulo de Black Mirror, pero no en este siglo. 

 

10- La interacción en grupo es un valor (y a veces un placer) insustituible:

La inmensa mayoría de nuestros estudiantes en Singapur, Hong Kong y Kuala Lumpur ven en las clases de español no solo una oportunidad para aprender el idioma, sino también una excusa perfecta para conocer a gente nueva con los mismos intereses, salir de la rutina, reírse, socializar, encontrar nuevas aficiones… Y eso tampoco lo ofrecen las apps.
