Gamifying our Spanish class
Language classes are often the most feared among students. As teachers we have the responsibility of making our classes engaging and relaxed. In this sense, innovation is key, and nowadays, talking about innovation is talking about gamification.
Gamify is not simply play in classroom, to be specific, gamify is to include elements of games in a context that is not related to it such as the Spanish class. As simple as it might seem, many teachers have a hard time trying to include these ludic elements in their classroom, that is why we offer some tips to use gamification without perishing in the attempt.
What do we need to gamify?
- Points and rakings: we can use them to quantify the progress and we can give them as a reward for completing a task Rankings can be used to show the position of each students according to their points; this can be a great tool if we have a competitive group.
- Challenges: these will be the mission to accomplish and will maintain our class engaged.
- Levels: in order to accomplish a mission the students will unlock different levels with progressive difficulty.
- Badges and prizes: Badges can be a way of showing the accomplishments such as being creative, use of the target language etc. They can also be used as prizes at the end of each mission or we can give separated prizes that will give a sense of finalization.
How do I gamify?
- Define your objective: We need to keep in mind a specific content that students need to put in practice. We can use those contents that are traditionally seen as more difficult.
- Make learning a game: We need to make a game out of the learning process; for that we can include elements of the traditional games such as battleship or Monopoli.
- Challenge your students: Establish a clear mission that entails some difficulty to engage your pupils. It can be finding a treasure or escaping from a room and they need to use to target language to accomplish it.
- Set rules: In order to keep everything under control and to avoid the chaos as well as keeping the learning objective in sight.
- Reward them: We all like to be acknowledged and your Spanish students are no exception to this, that is why is important to motivate them creating diplomas, prices etc.
Games are an important part of human development. They are crucial in our socialization process and they can also come in handy in a learning process as the neurologist Francisco Mora highlights “playing is learning in disguise”
