Where do the names of the colors in Spanish come from?

The topic of the colors has generated a lot of papers among anthropological and linguistic researchers, specially about the connection between language and perception: do we perceive better the tonal differences between those tones that have a name in our language? In this article we will not put the focus on the linguistic determinism, but, simply, in the origin of some color names in Spanish.

Azul (blue):

Languages connected with Spanish usually have a name for that color in which the structure bl + vowel/s is present: bleu, in French; blau, in Catalan… In Spanish that formula has been replaced by azul: this word come from the Arabic lazawárd, name given to the deep-blue metamorphic rock lapis lazuli.

Rojo (red):

The noun red is used in Spanish since the 15th century. It comes from the Latin word russus, used to make reference to a specific tone of red: dark red. Before that, terms such as bermejo, colorado or encarnado were commonly used by Iberian speakers.

Naranja (orange):

What was first, the colour or the fruit? The answer is simple: the fruit. The word naranja has an Arabic origin, and it was used to name the fruit. Then the same word was used to make reference to the color of that entity.

Amarillo (yellow):

The name of this color has its origin in the word that was used in Latin to make reference to the bitter taste. The link between both concepts has to be found in the colour of the skin when people have liver problems: bile was called bitter humor. Is Spanish bitter is amargo.

Verde (green):

The word virĭdis was used in Latín to name the same colour… but also to make reference to vigorous and full of life things. 

Negro (black):

In Latin niger was used to name the shiny black colour. The matte black had another name: ater.

Blanco (white):

This word has its origin in the German language spoken by the invaders of the Iberian Peninsula in the middle ages. Its been registered since the 12th century. Before that, the Latin word albus was spreadly used.

¿De dónde vienen los nombres de los colores en español?

El tema de los colores ha dado para muchos estudios lingüísticos y antropológicos, especialmente la relación entre lenguaje y percepción: ¿percibimos mejor las diferencias entre los tonos a los que damos un nombre distinto? En este artículo no entraremos en esas complejas cuestiones sobre el determinismo lingüístico, sino que, simplemente, abordaremos el origen de los nombres de algunos colores en castellano.

Azul:

Mientras que el las lenguas cercanas al español el nombre de este color suele estar formado por bl + vocal/es (blue, en inglés; bleu, en francés; blau, en catalán…), en español hemos sustituido esta fórmula por azul: esta palabra viene del árabe “lazawárd”, término relacionado con “lāzuward”, que era el nombre de la famosa gema azul que actualmente conocemos como “lapislázuli”.

Rojo:

La palabra rojo, que empezó a utilizarse en el español en el siglo XV, viene del adjetivo latino russus, que era un tono específico de rojo: un rojo fuerte. Antes de que rojo se impusiera como vocablo más frecuente, solían emplearse bermejo, colorado o encarnado.

Naranja: 

¿Qué fue antes; la fruta o el color? La respuesta es sencilla: la fruta. El término naranja se tomó en principio del árabe para hacer referencia al fruto. Después dio nombre al color.

Amarillo:

El nombre de este color viene del término latino que se empleaba para el sabor amargo. El origen de esta asociación está en el color que adquiría la piel por el mal funcionamiento en la secreción de la bilis, llamada entonces humor amargo.

Verde:

Viene de virĭdis, que se empleaba en latín, además de para denominar ese color, también para hacer referencia a aquello que tenía mucha vida y vigor.

Negro: 

En latín se empleaba niger únicamente para denominar el color negro brillante. El negro mate recibía un nombre distinto: ater.

Blanco:

Este adjetivo llegó al español desde el alemán en la Edad Media, en la época de las invasiones germánicas. Hay constancia de su uso desde el siglo XII. Antes, se empleaba la palabra latina albus.
