Spanish Lessons in the Tech Era

4 or 5 years ago, Pearson sold its stake in the Financial Times and the Economist (two of its flagships) to invest in education technology. I thought to myself back then that the revolution in the education sector was coming, after music, consumer goods, even human relationships, that had already been dramatically impacted.

I am yet to see what Pearson have come up with after their investment in ed-tech but, truth be said, I do think there will be, and there has to be a digital impact in education, but it will not be as disruptive as everyone seems to have assumed.

The main reason for me to believe this is, although in some areas I do believe that online self learning courses will succeed, is that the added value of a  GOOD teacher is immense; insights, nuances, real life experience, human connection. Hence, we will always look up to the experts, to learn from them.

Blended Learning Will Facilitate Spanish Lessons

My opinion is that today, the teacher is still too much of a lecturer and that the figure will evolve to an enabler, facilitator, tutor. But I have no doubt that there will continue to be a leading figure and subject matter expert in most training programs.

In language learning, more than in any other segment of education, the human component is key, as the final goal of learning a language is to be able to socialize.

To study Spanish, although it is also a very useful global connectivity tool, one of the main attractions is to open the door to a vast, rich, diverse culture with a unique way of life.  You cannot remove the human component from the Spanish language practice!

To me, in education, moreover in language learning – and especially in Spanish – the ideal mode of pursuit is through a blend, combining the human referent, who motivates and engages the student, alongside the tools provided to us by new technologies.  This is the way to embrace a new language, and this is what we offer our clients at Spanish World!

Lecciones de español en la era tecnológica

Hace 4 o 5 años, Pearson vendió su participación en el Financial Times y en el Economist (dos de sus buques insignia) para invertir en tecnología de la educación. Pensé, por entonces, que la revolución en el sector educativo era inminente, después de que la música, el consumo, hasta las relaciones humanas, se hubieran visto tremendamente impactadas.

Todavía no he observado que Pearson haya  desarrollado nada con su inversión en ed – tech, pero lo cierto es que sí creo que tiene que haber un impacto digital en la educación, pero no tan disruptivo como todo el mundo asume.

La principal razón para creer esto es que, mientras sí que habrá áreas donde cursos de aprendizaje individual online triunfarán, es que el valor añadido de un BUEN profesor es inmenso; percepciones, matices, profundidad, experiencias, la propia conexión humana. Por ello, siempre buscaremos a los expertos, para aprender de ellos.

‘B-Learning’ facilitará la enseñanza de español

Mi opinión es que, todavía, el profesor es demasiado académico, y su figura evolucionará hacia la de guía, facilitador, tutor. Pero no tengo duda que continuará habiendo un líder del grupo en el aprendizaje y espero en la materia, en la mayoría de los cursos de formación.

En el aprendizaje de idiomas, más que en cualquier otro segmento de la educación, el componente humano es clave, ya que el objetivo final, al aprender un idioma, es socialilizar.

Al estudiar español, aunque es una herramienta muy útil de conectividad global, una de las atracciones principales es que ter abre la puerta a una cultura vasta, rica, antigua, diversa y una forma única de vivir. ¡No puedes extirpar el componente humano de la práctica de la lengua española!

Para mí, en la educación, más aún en el aprendizaje de idiomas y, todavía más, en el español, la mamera ideal de enfocarlo es con una integración perfecta entre la figura humana que motiva y cautiva al estudiante y las herramientas que la tecnología provee. ¡Esto es lo que ofrecemos a nuestros estudiantes, en Spanish World!
