About the DELE Exam
DELE stands for “Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera” – Diplomas for Spanish as Foreign Language – and it’s the international standard exam for proving Spanish language competency.
The exams are issued by the Insituto Cervantes, the Public Institution founded by the Spanish Government, of which Spanish World is Hong Kong’s only accredited school.
The exam follows the standards set by the Common European Framework of References for Languages, or CEFRL, and is taken by over 60,000 people every year, making it the most popular Official Exam for the Spanish language.
There are 6 levels of DELE examination, corresponding to the six skill-levels denominated by the Insituto Cervantes:
- A1 DELE: Initial
Confirms the basic knowledge of Spanish: understanding of everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at satisfying the basic needs such as the ability to answer simple questions.
- A2 DELE: Low Intermediate
Confirms the following basic knowledge of the Spanish language: common and simple phrases, understanding and formulating expressions, giving and requesting information on simple aspects of daily life such as shopping, hobbies, family, etc.
- B1 DELE: Intermediate
Demonstrates a basic knowledge of Spanish in oral and written communication. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Ability to deal simple interviews.
- B2 DELE: Advanced
Credits a very good general knowledge of Spanish. Ability to deal with everyday situations. Conversations in Spanish can be performed easily, as long as they do not address very complex issues.
- C1 DELE: High Advanced
Confirms a very good knowledge of Spanish. Ability to communicate easily in any situation, even if the subject is abstract and complex.
- C2 DELE: Superior
Confirms a very good knowledge of Spanish. Ability to communicate easily in any situation, even if the subject is abstract and complex.
Once attained, the Diplomas are valid in perpetuity, so you will never have to take a DELE exam that you have already passed.
