Como cada julio la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba, situada en la zona sureste de la isla, se tiñe de música y color. También recibe a muchos turistas que vienen de distintas partes del mundo.

 

Pero… ¿por qué?

 

La razón es muy sencilla, durante esta primera semana de julio tiene lugar el Festival del Fuego, conocido como el Festival del Caribe. Este festival es el más importante del Caribe, se celebra desde el año 1981,  y reúne las costumbres típicas caribeñas que son la fusión de los pueblos amerindios y africanos. Por eso durante una semana  podemos ver a más de 200 artistas que vienen desde distintos países para la ocasión.

 

 

Santiago, abre por toda la ciudad diferentes recintos donde se realizan los diferentes espectáculos de pintura, ceremonias religiosas, rituales mágicos, teatros, encuentros gastronómicos, etc. Además, durante todo este tiempo en las calles no cesa la música, acompañada siempre por los típicos tambores cubanos. Y por supuesto los bailes, la salsa, la rumba y el  chachachá son los preferidos.

 

 

Esta fiesta, que mezcla historia, tradición y cultura caribeña, termina con una multitudinaria procesión que culmina con una gran hoguera donde se quema una estatua que simboliza al diablo, entidad suprema de lo malo en todas las culturas. Al quemarlo nos limpia y deja pasar lo nuevo. A la luz del fuego se ven las caras entusiasmadas de las personas que saben que año tras año regresarán de nuevo al Festival del Fuego.

 

 

The Festival of Fire

 

Like every July, the city of Santiago de Cuba, located in the southeast of the island, is tinged with music and colour. It also receives many tourists who come from different parts of the world, but … why?

 

The reason is very simple, during this first week of July the Fire Festival takes place, known as the Caribbean Festival. This festival is the most important in the Caribbean, it has been celebrated since 1981, and it brings together the typical Caribbean customs that are the fusion of the Amerindian and African peoples. So for a week we can see more than 200 artists coming from different countries for the occasion.

 

 

Santiago, opens throughout the city different venues where different painting shows, religious ceremonies, magical rituals, theatres, gastronomic gatherings, etc. are held. In addition, during all this time in the streets the music does not stop, always accompanied by the typical Cuban drums. And of course the dances, salsa, rumba and chachachá are the favourites.

 

 

This festival, which mixes Caribbean history, tradition and culture, ends with a massive procession that culminates in a large bonfire where a statue that symbolizes the devil, the supreme entity of evil in all cultures, is burned. Burning it cleanses us and lets the new happen. In the light of the fire you can see the excited faces of people who know that year after year they will return to the Festival of Fire again.
