10 reasons to visit Bizkaia

Given the current coronavirus situation and spending that long at home, it is quite normal that our imagination flies away and we are planning where to travel and what places to visit when all this is over. Therefore, we would like to invite you to get to know Bizkaia, a province belonging to Basque Country in the North of Spain, 4 times bigger than Singapore and which has Bilbao as its capital city.

Why Bizkaia among all the places in the world? Because of 2 main reasons: it is a spectacular place and the author of this article is the only member of the Spanish World family who is originally from there.

We hereby mention 10 reasons to visit Bizkaia, even though there could be millions of them 😊

1. Guggenheim Museum

Opened in 1997, this contemporary art museum is considered to be the first official milestone of the transformation suffered by Bilbao from an industrial city to being service oriented. Designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, it has become a huge icon of the city thanks to its amazing shape.

2. Bosque de Oma (Oma Forest)

During the 80s, sculptor and painter Agustín Ibarrola, created this open air piece of art in the forest located in Kortezubi, around 35 kilometres away from Bilbao. It is a magical place in which its creator painted the trees in a way they would be part of different geometrical, antropomorphic and animal shaped mosaics depending on the perspective.

3. Puente Bizkaia o Puente Colgante (Bizkaia Bridge or Suspended Bridge

http://spain.info

In 1893, this ferry-like bridge was opened, becoming the first of its kind and one of the only 8 that are still preserved. It connects Portugalete and Getxo through Nervión estuary and it keeps being used by thousands of commuters everyday.

4. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

This picture may look familiar if you are into Game of Thrones since it was part of the infamous show as Dagonstone. Located between two beautiful villages, Bermeo and Bakio, this gorgeous spot hosts a chapel from 10th century which can be visited by climbing 231 stairs. Unpronounceable to many, its name comes from the basque words “gaztelu” (castle) and “atx” (rock) which leads us to the next reason.A body of water with a mountain in the background Description automatically generated

5. Euskera (Basque Language)

Bizkaia has 2 official langauges: Spanish and Basque. It is one of the few preindoeuropean languages in Europe and the only survivor among them in Western Europe. Basque has no linguistic connection to other languages, resulting in a constant interest from experts and other language fanatics. I hereby share a sentence in Basque which is actually very convenient to know in any language: “a beer, please”.

6. Pintxos

http://bilbaoplan.com

Gastronomy is such an important element in this region, that not mentioning it could even be considered a sin. Pintxos are one of the biggest pieces of evidence of this fact, a slice of bread topped by a small portion of food. Besides their outstanding quality and presentation, pintxos are also a huge part of locals’ socialization. They could be found in any of the thousands of bars scattered in the area.

7. Casco Viejo de Bilbao (Bilbao – Old Town) (De Claudiapenanunez – Trabajo propio, CC BY-SA 4.0)

32 beaches sprinkle all 108 kilometres of Bizkaia coastline. All of them located in the Cantabric Sea and many of them known because of their excellent conditions to surf, its unbeatable landscape of green cliffs that fall down to the beach, and of course, its beauty.

In Bizkaia football is a great passion and Athletic Club de Bilbao (the local team) its biggest exponent. Founded in 1898, it is the second oldest team in Spain. Among its peculiarities we could highlight the fact that it is one of the only 3 teams, along with Barcelona and Real Madrid, that have never been in the second league. In addition, it has its own philosophy by only employing player who were either born or raised in the region. Its stadium, San Mames Barria, won the “best sports building in the world award” back in 2015 at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
